What Size Paddle Board Do I Need?

One of the most common questions from people buying their first paddle board is: what size do I actually need? The answer depends on a few things, but it is not as complicated as it might seem.

Here is what the numbers mean and how to use them to find the right board.

    The Three Key Measurements

Paddle boards are measured by length, width, and thickness. Each one affects how the board performs on the water.

    Length

Length affects speed and how well the board tracks in a straight line. Longer boards are faster and hold their line better. Shorter boards are more manoeuvrable but slower.

    • Under 10ft: best for kids or surfing in waves
    • 10ft to 11ft: the sweet spot for most adult beginners and all-round recreational paddling
    • 11ft to 12ft: good for taller or heavier paddlers, or those who want more speed on flat water
    • 12ft and above: touring and racing boards, not ideal for beginners

Our Salcombe Seeker is 11ft, which puts it right in the all-round sweet spot for adult paddlers of most sizes.

    Width

Width is the most important factor for stability. Wider boards are more stable and easier to balance on, which matters a lot when you are learning.

    • Under 30 inches: performance and racing boards, not for beginners
    • 30 to 32 inches: the ideal range for most recreational paddlers, stable without being sluggish
    • 32 inches and above: very stable, good for yoga SUP or paddlers who prioritise stability over speed

The Salcombe Seeker is 31 inches wide, giving excellent stability for beginners while still being responsive enough for more experienced paddlers.

    Thickness

For inflatable boards, thickness determines rigidity. Most quality inflatables are 6 inches thick. This is the standard for a reason. Thinner boards flex more underfoot, which feels unstable and wastes energy with every stroke.

Avoid any inflatable board that is less than 6 inches thick.

    Does Weight Matter?

Yes. Every board has a maximum weight capacity. Make sure the board you choose comfortably exceeds your body weight, ideally with at least 20 to 30kg of headroom. A board that is overloaded sits low in the water and becomes difficult to control.

If you are on the heavier side or plan to carry gear on the board, go for a longer, wider board with a higher weight rating.

    What About Height?

Height matters mainly for paddle length rather than board size. Taller paddlers may prefer a slightly longer board for comfort, but it is not a strict rule. Width and weight capacity are more important for most people.

    A Simple Guide

    • Average adult, recreational paddling, beginner: 10ft to 11ft long, 30 to 32 inches wide, 6 inches thick
    • Heavier paddler or carrying gear: 11ft to 12ft, 32 inches wide
    • Child or smaller adult: 9ft to 10ft
    • Fitness paddling or touring: 11ft to 12ft, narrower width
