How to Choose Your First Paddle Board

Buying your first paddle board is one of those decisions that feels more complicated than it needs to be. There are hundreds of options, a lot of jargon, and everyone seems to have a strong opinion.

Here is the straightforward version. Everything you need to know to pick the right board and get on the water.

    Inflatable or Hard Board?

For most beginners in the UK, an inflatable SUP (also called an ISUP) is the right choice. Here is why:

    • Easy to transport and store, no roof rack needed
    • Durable enough for rivers, lakes, and coastal paddling
    • Much more forgiving if you fall on it
    • Modern inflatables are rigid enough that you will not notice the difference on flat water

Hard boards are faster and better for surfing or racing, but they are harder to store, harder to transport, and more expensive. Start with an inflatable.

    What Size Do You Need?

Size is the most important factor for beginners. The key measurements are length, width, and thickness.

    Length

Most all-round beginner boards are 10ft to 11ft. Longer boards are faster and track better in a straight line. Shorter boards are more manoeuvrable. For general paddling, 11ft is a great starting point.

    Width

Width determines stability. Wider boards are more stable, which matters a lot when you are learning. Look for at least 30 inches wide. Our Salcombe Seeker is 31 inches wide, which gives excellent stability without sacrificing too much speed.

    Thickness

Most quality inflatables are 6 inches thick. This gives the board its rigidity when inflated. Avoid anything thinner.

    What About Weight Capacity?

Every board has a maximum weight rating. Make sure the board you choose comfortably exceeds your weight, ideally with some headroom. A board that is overloaded sits low in the water and becomes unstable.

    What Comes in the Box?

A good beginner package should include the board, a paddle, a pump, a leash, and a carry bag. If any of those are missing, factor in the extra cost. Our Salcombe Seeker comes with all of the above, so you are ready to go straight out of the box.

    Where Will You Paddle?

Think about where you will actually use the board most of the time.

    • Flat lakes and rivers: almost any all-round board works well
    • Coastal and sea paddling: look for a board with good tracking and a leash attachment point
    • Surfing: you want a shorter, narrower board, but this is not a beginner priority

For UK coastal paddling, an 11ft all-rounder like the Salcombe Seeker is ideal.

    What Else Do You Need?

Once you have your board sorted, there are a few accessories worth picking up before your first session. A changing robe for getting in and out of your wetsuit on the beach, a dry bag for your phone and keys, and a changing mat to keep the sand out of your wetsuit.
