Do You Need a Wetsuit for Paddle Boarding in the UK?

It is one of the most common questions from people new to paddle boarding in the UK. Do I actually need a wetsuit?

The short answer is: it depends on the time of year. But the longer answer is worth knowing before you head out, because UK water temperatures can be genuinely dangerous if you are not prepared.

    Why Water Temperature Matters

Air temperature and water temperature are very different things in the UK. Even on a warm summer day, the sea around Britain can be 14 to 17 degrees Celsius. In spring and autumn it drops to 10 to 13 degrees. In winter, it can be below 8 degrees.

Cold water shock is a real risk. If you fall in unexpectedly, cold water can cause involuntary gasping, muscle cramps, and disorientation within seconds. A wetsuit significantly reduces that risk by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin that your body warms up.

    When You Need a Wetsuit

As a general rule, if the water temperature is below 15 degrees Celsius, wear a wetsuit. In the UK, that means:

    • October to May: a wetsuit is strongly recommended
    • June to September: depends on location, but a shorty or thin full suit is sensible
    • Year-round in Scotland and northern England: water stays cold even in summer

    What Thickness Do You Need?

Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimetres. The higher the number, the warmer the suit.

    • 2mm shorty: summer only, water above 18 degrees
    • 2mm to 3mm full suit: late spring and early autumn
    • 3mm to 5mm full suit: winter paddling in UK waters

Our wetsuit range covers 2mm and 3mm options suitable for most UK conditions through the warmer months.

What to Wear Instead in Summer

If the water is warm enough and you are paddling in a sheltered location, you can get away without a wetsuit. In that case, wear:

    • UV-protective rash vest or board shorts
    • A wide-brim sun hat to protect from UV reflected off the water
    • Sunscreen, reapplied regularly
    • Water shoes or neoprene boots if the launch point is rocky

What to Wear After Your Session

Getting changed on a UK beach is where most people wish they had planned better. A waterproof changing robe makes the whole process much easier. You can get changed underneath it, stay warm while you dry off, and not have to wrestle with a wetsuit in the wind.

Pair it with a wetsuit changing mat to keep sand off your feet and out of your suit.

One More Thing: Always Wear Your Leash

Whatever you wear in the water, always attach your leash before you launch. If you fall off, your board is your best flotation device. Keep it attached to you.
