Best Dry Bags for Paddle Boarding and Kayaking

A dry bag is one of the most useful things you can own as a paddleboarder or kayaker. Your phone, keys, wallet, snacks, and spare layers all need to stay dry, and a good dry bag makes that simple.

Here is how to choose the right one for how you paddle.

    How Dry Bags Work

Most dry bags use a roll-top closure. You fold the top of the bag down several times and clip it shut. This creates a watertight seal that keeps water out even if the bag is submerged. The more times you roll the top, the better the seal.

Some bags also have a waterproof zip or a welded seam construction for extra protection. These are worth paying for if you are regularly in rough water or surf.

    What Size Do You Need?

Size is the most important decision. Too small and you cannot fit everything in. Too large and the bag becomes awkward to carry or store on your board.

    2L to 5L

Compact bags ideal for short sessions where you just need to carry your phone, keys, and a snack. Our 2L Strava Bag and 5L Snack Bag are perfect for clipping to your board or wearing as a waist pack on shorter paddles.

    10L to 20L

The most versatile size range. Big enough for a full day's essentials including a change of clothes, food, and a first aid kit, but compact enough to carry comfortably. Our 10L, 20L, and 30L Kit Bag covers this range with a shoulder carry option that works well on and off the water.

    30L and Above

For multi-day trips, camping, or carrying a full kit change. Our Long Trips Away bag and the On Carry Bag are built for longer adventures where you need serious capacity.

    Shoulder Bag or Backpack Style?

For paddle boarding, a shoulder bag or waist pack is often more practical than a backpack. You can clip it to your board's bungee cords and access it without taking it off. For kayaking, a backpack-style dry bag that sits behind your seat works well.

Our Kit Bag has an adjustable shoulder strap that works for both.

    What About a Deck Bag?

A deck bag is a small waterproof bag that clips directly to your board's bungee cords and sits on the nose of the board. It keeps small essentials within reach while you paddle without having to stop and dig into a larger bag. Great for sunscreen, a snack, or a small dry bag for your phone.

    Key Features to Look For

    • IPX rating or waterproof depth rating: higher is better for rough conditions
    • Welded seams rather than stitched seams for maximum waterproofing
    • Comfortable carry options: shoulder strap, waist belt, or backpack straps
    • Bright colours or reflective strips for visibility on the water
    • A transparent window or external pocket for items you need to access quickly
